for three part treble choir with SATB choir and finger cymbals

  • Programme Note

In the deepness of the night before Christmas, children dream of exciting and wondrous things: so do adults, but they are also fraught with arrangements and planning for the big day. a call for simplicity and remembering the loving and gifting nature of Christmas. This piece is performed “in the round” i.e. the adult choir encircles the audience and the children stand up the central aisle. The adult choir gradually moves around the audience and sings at times in smaller groupings. The audience does not know where the sound will come from next. The children need to be able to hold 3 simple parts. Finger cymbals are used to indicate stars and nocturnal animals create an interesting opening. It is depicts a New Zealand Christmas experience.

Psalm 121

for SATB choir with 2 flutes, oboe, clarinet and piano

  • Programme Note

This setting of Psalm 121 was commissioned by Kentoris, a choir from Saint Kentigern College in Auckland conducted by Kath Deeble. The request was for a fairly straightforward and melodic setting, with accompaniment by a small ensemble allowing some of the school’s fine wind players to participate. An alternative accompaniment for solo piano is also available.

I was also asked to consider using the version of Psalm 121 from the NZ Prayer Book. It is a fairly free adaptation of the text in contemporary language. After considering various translations from different Bibles I decided the suggested translation was a very suitable one for a school choir as it avoided some of the more archaic language in other versions. An ‘Amen’ has been added to the text, and the work ends by returning to the opening lines of the psalm.
