An extract from Wenceslas (1992) a cantata for choir and orchestra by Philip Norman, commissioned by the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, setting the words of the traditional Czech carol, Carol of the Birds. First performed in the New Zealand version by The Cathedral Grammar School Choir at the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra’s 2005 Christmas Proms. Arranged for a capella SATB in 2009.
He Honore, He Kororia (Honour and Glory to God) was composed at the invitation of the New Zealand Maori Catholic Central Council, as the test piece for their 50th Jubilee Hui Aranga, held in Otaki, Easter 1996.
Described as an “…early World War One setting canoe poi song” which was originally sung by concert parties on the east coast of the North Island in fund raising concerts for World War One Maori soldiers. Composed by P. H. Tomoana, it is one of a number of his songs that appeared in the second decade of the twentieth century, and which broke from the traditional waiata styles of Maori music.
