Cycles, Shadows

Duration: 04' 00" Year: 2009
for clarinet, viola/bassoon and Javanese gender

  • Programme Note

This work was written especially for two great friends (and myself): clarinet virtuoso and winner of the 2009 NZSM Concerto Competition, Andrzej Nowicki, and the multi-talented Kylie Nesbit, whose unusual viola-bassoon combination particularly amuses me. The cycles-within-cycles and extreme performance requirements of the piece are directly inspired by Jack Body’s Epicycle string quartet; while the rhythms are inspired by traditional Chinese erhu.

Incus

Duration: 08' 00" Year: 2005
for bass clarinet, trombone, and cello

  • Programme Note

Incus is the third and final piece in series of three trios collectively entitled Middle Ear. The incus (or anvil) is a bone in the chain of three that transmit vibrations from the eardrum to the internal ear in the process of transformation of external sound waves to an emotional or cognitive response within the listener. The work (somewhat arbitrarily) incorporates elements from J.S. Bach’s harmonization of the chorale Christus, de uns selig macht, and was influenced by the late novellas of Samuel Beckett.

Nocturne and Sunrise

Duration: 10' 30" Year: 2008
trio for flute, viola and guitar

  • Instrumentation
alto flute is required for the middle section of this piece
  • Programme Note

Nocturne & Sunrise was commissioned by Serenata a Tre for performance during their 2009 tour of New Zealand. It was written for performers Donald Maurice, viola, Barbara Hill, flute, and Giovanni Seneca, guitar. The work is in one continuous movement, divided into three sections:
    1. Languid but uneasy

    2. Slow, creeping

    3. Fast, energetic

The trio was started while the composer was on study leave in France. It is inspired by the transition from evening through night and on to morning. Different moods and atmospheres are created, from the slightly moody opening that bursts into a rock-like passage, through to the sounds of night-time in a small Parisian apartment – with distant echoes of footsteps, doors shutting, and so forth. There is tension and uncertainty in this middle section, which is then dispelled by the buoyant final section, a gig.

This creation of this work was funded by The University of Otago, as part of the composer’s 2008 study leave.

sama sama

Duration: 09' 00" Year: 2009
for flute, viola and harp

  • Programme Note

In Java, sama sama “that’s fine” is the usual friendly response to terima kasih “thankyou”.

This piece is my response to a vividly memorable time spent attending a contemporary composition festival in Jogja when I was the Jack C Richards/Creative New Zealand resident composer (2008-2009).
