This piece was inspired by the beguiling sounds of the aeolian harp to which I was first introduced by Chris Cree Brown. Said to have been first ‘discovered’ by the ancient Greeks, aeolian harps are intended to be played not by human hands, but by the wind. The strings vibrates through a range of harmonics creating an eerie effect difficult to describe.

This Scherzo makes pairs of repeated notes its main feature. Intervals of the semitone and minor third predominate, although there is also an underlying tonal basis to much of the music, especially in the middle section. The intention was to create a work that had a ‘playful’ spirit, hence the title.

This short work was commissioned by Rebecca Hendl for her to play at a sponsors function for the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra. Rebecca was a former student of mine (at Epsom Girls Grammar School) and had recently joined the administration staff of the orchestra.
