Duration: 12' 00" Year: 2000
five pieces for piano

Reprise

Duration: 11' 00" Year: 2005
for piano duet

  • Instrumentation
two soft beaters required for secondo player
  • Programme Note

The title refers to the musical material first heard in the second half of the piece, which is a reprise of the theme of the fifth of my Five Breaths in the New Year 2004 for piano solo. The mood of the earlier piece however is quite different, being slower and meditative; here by contrast it is monumental and militaristic. The piece’s opening on the other hand is much gentler; a spacious melody is heard over the sustained broken chords of the secondo part. I am indebted to Andy Gomez for the jazz riff upon which it is based.

Composed in Yogyakarta in January 2005 for the concert given the following month at Theatre Utan Kayu, Jakarta of my pieces for piano for two and four hands. The performers on this occasion were Ross Carey and Andy Setiawan.

Three Pieces for Double Piano Duet

Duration: 10' 00" Year: 2008
for two pianos, 8 hands

  • Programme Note

After I composed Hammerheads for double piano duet in 2008, I immediately embarked on a set of three contrasting pieces for the same combination. There were some musical ideas existing from the earlier work that I wanted to explore further.

The first piece March-Scherzo contrasts a march-like rhythm in duple metre with a spiky, scherzando style in triple time. This is similar to the late 16th century way of contrasting duple time with a faster triple time in instrumental pieces particularly those of the Venetian school of composers headed by the Gabrielis.

The second piece Kokakos at Dawn is an evocative musical commentary on the first piece of my For the Kokako set of five pieces composed in 1978 which was based on the bird call of a single kokako. Each pianist silently depresses four keys thus allowing the harmonics of each played note to resonate.

Nelsonian Riffs is a light hearted piece based on a repeated rhythmic pattern and interrupted by some skittish delights. Here the pianists let ‘their hair down’!
