A New Zealand Doxology

Duration: 08' 00" Year: 1991
for solo soprano, SATB choir and organ

  • Programme Note

This work is a setting of a text by Rev. Len Horwood (d.1990), minister of Mt Albert Methodist Church (Auckland) in the 1960’s, and was written at the request of Mervyn Rosser – choirmaster of Mt Albert Methodist Church. This particular hymn of praise to God draws its inspiration from aspects of the New Zealand landscape – especially the plants and trees. References are made to the kauri, the rata, and the kowhai, as well as the lakes, mountains and valleys.

Amokura

Duration: 05' 00" Year: 2008
a lullaby for SATB choir with piano accompaniment

  • Programme Note

Amokura refers to a red-tailed tropic bird, a rare visitor to Aotearoa/New Zealand, whose tail-feather is treasured by Māori. One such feather was incorporated into the design of a pūtōrino (flute) that Dr Melbourne played. This was one of the last songs Dr Melbourne wrote, and he never recorded it; as with all of his songs, only the words were written down. The song was written for his granddaughter, also called Amokura, who is perhaps the only person who ever heard it sung.

Dr Melbourne devoted his life to restoring the voices of traditional Māori instruments, which had lain, unplayed in museums in Aotearoa/New Zealand and around the world. His passion for these taonga pūoro or ‘singing treasures’ shines through in the words of this song, where he likens Amokura to all those things most special to him.

Auld Lang Syne

Duration: 05' 20" Year: 2013
arrangement for SATB and piano

  • Programme Note

The poem “Auld Lang Syne” was written by Robert Burns in 1788. Throughout the English-speaking world it is used to mark the new year, and is also often sung at other important occasions such as graduations and funerals. The poem calls on those assembled to remember and treasure long-standing friendships. It is possible that Burns based his poem on an earlier one from 1711 written by James Watson, with which it shares some similar text and sentiments. Other earlier poems also used the phrase ‘auld lang syne’.

The tune with which the words is mainly associated these days, is probably not the tune Burns originally intended. This arrangement is of the melody that (it is believed) Burns originally used for his poem. Although some elements of the melody are similar to the more widely sung tune, the melody arranged here has more of a folk-song quality to it. It also has a wider vocal range, making massed singing more of a challenge!

The arrangement was made for Bede Williams and the Pentland Singers (Scotland).

Ave Maria

Duration: 05' 00" Year: 2005
for SATB choir and piano

  • Programme Note

Ave Maria (op. 4) was written in the beginning of 2005 during the first few weeks of my move to Wellington from the South Island, and was written specifically for the New Zealand Secondary Students’ Choir Choral Composition Award 2005. The music is set to the traditional sacred text “Ave Maria”, and is for a mixed choir (SATB) with piano accompaniment.

The piece requires a competent choir to deal with the expression detail and complex harmonies used throughout. Successful communication of the text is a must, as well as keeping the melodic lines flowing constantly.
