The Cruiser

 Year: 2008
for SATB choir

  • Programme Note

Will Lawson (1876-1957) has been likened to Kipling, and based much of his poetry on his experiences at sea, and as a fireman on the railways. His poetry was published in both New Zealand Australia, and he settled in the latter country later in life.

The Cruiser is a purely descriptive poem about a battered ship fighting its way into port – “…tottering, weary, crushed but game, groping her blind way home.”
The music sets the poem in a style reminiscent of a sea shanty, with plenty of rhythmic energy.

The Cruiser was written for Waitomo Caves Choir, for their overseas tour which would include, appropriately, a performance in the chapel of the Naval College at Greenwich.
