    The poem is a reflection of the transient nature of love and life. The gamelan, being an intergral part of a traditional which sees life as cyclic, maybe offers a balance. I have endeavoured to express this polarity by using traditional materials in non-traditional ways.

    Whilst studying at Goldsmith College, University of London, I began to enjoy Japanese Haiku. The book “The Mountain Poems of Stonehouse” made a very strong impression and as a result I wrote the music for a very short song entitled Alone. The words of the poem are so simple and charming:

    The cranes call
    As they cross to the reeds,
    Faint and helpless,
    Now I lie alone.

    And yet there is a hint of sadness…
