Counting through the tones of ‘In a Landscape’ by John Cage, in the manner of counting a rosary. The title means an offering to Buddha; this is not so much a material offering but more that of a good heart.

Composed in Toronto in June, 2001 and first performed by the Natsuki Emura Piano Duo in a concert of New Zealand piano music at MusiCasa, Tokyo in October 2001.

These pieces were originally piano duets, written with one easy part for my wife to play, and presented to her on various anniversary occasions in the 1960s. This orchestral suite was arranged for the 1965 Cambridge Summer Music School, and first performed there by the school’s orchestra. The translation from piano to orchestral sounds makes many opportunities for variety of colours and for real sostenuto. But while orchestral sound is bound to be very different, I have attempted in the Trio of the Mexicana to capture something of the effect of the piano’s harmonic resonance to provide sustaining echoes of the oboe’s tune.

The 100 Voice Chorale based on the North Shore of Auckland commissioned Denise Hulford to write a Christmas Carol for the Choir. After spending some time searching for a poem with a happy tone to it, and not being able to find anything suitable, Denise commissioned Jenny Pattrick to write a poem. The poem that Jenny provided was exciting, accessible and quite humorous. The final work was a fun and Christmas focused composition which was most successful, and approximately the length of a short Cantata. The work has been performed a number of times, and has always been well received.

This short cycle examines the differences between northern and southern hemisphere experiences of Christmas. These differences are encapsulated in Margaret Mahy’s early poem Christmas in New Zealand which contrasts the colours of a summertime Christmas with the images of snow and robins on Christmas cards. The second piece sets a Christina Rossetti poem which suggests that Christ’s birth was early in the day watched only by the angels and the animals. The third piece sets a traditional text which describes the typical landscapes of a northern hemisphere Christmas – the bare tress and the animals foraging for food. The fourth movement is a piece for band alone, which picks up on elements of the opening movement as well as varied treatment of fragments from the well-known carol “Good King Wenceslas”. The final piece sets a widely anthologized poem of unknown authorship. It humorously returns us to a summertime Christmas where there‘s no snow, and where Santa might end up with a suntan in the “Pacific summertime” Christmas.
