Written for the Auckland Philharmonia Education concerts, this piece demonstrates the different sections of the orchestra.

After a short introduction played by the full orchestra, each of the sections of the orchestra take turns to play the main theme. The strings begin playing both with the bow (arco) and plucking (pizzicato), followed by the woodwind section which begins with the whole woodwind section and then the double reed instruments, the oboes and bassoons, which have a section by themselves. The brass then take over and finally the percussion lead the orchestra back into a reprise of the opening section to conclude.

Jubilee March was written in 1977 for the Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II and scored for brass band. This orchestral arrangement was made by the composer for the performance at the concert to mark her 80th birthday given at the Marches School, Oswestry on April 8th, 2000 by the Oswestry Sinfonia, conducted by Ian Ward.

New Year Fanfare attempts to capture the spirit of a New Year’s Eve spent in Yogyakarta, Java. The main street “Jalan Malioboro” was thronging with jubilant crowds blowing countless varieties of hooters ingeniously created from recycled junk. The sounds of these hooters, transformed, and the influence of Indonesian gamelan are striking in this extrovert piece.

New Year Fanfare was composed for the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra while I was their resident composer in 1994.
