Knot

Duration: 01' 00" Year: 1996
for bass clarinet and cello

  • Programme Note

This miniature was written in 1996 as a wedding present for its dedicatees: bass clarinettist Andrew Uren and cellist Katherine Hebley. One source of the title, reflected in the music, is a line from John Donne’s poem The Extasie (1633), which—on one level—depicts two lovers
    physically and spiritually entwined.

As our blood labours to beget
Spirits, as like soules as it can,
Because such fingers need to knit
That subtile knot, which makes us man:
So must pure lovers soules descend
    T’affections, and to faculties,
Which sense may reach and apprehend,
Else a great Prince in prison lies.

Magnificat

Duration: 02' 20" Year: 1996
for SATB choir

  • Programme Note

In 1996, I undertook to write a musical called The Last Word for the Festival Singers under the directorship of Guy Jansen. I shared the job with a fellow member of the choir Felicia Edgecombe. The show ran over several nights at Queen Margaret College hall in Thorndon Wellington and explored the words of Jesus and the impact these had on his contemporaries and today. The solo version of this song was well received and called for a choral arrangement. It is an accessible homophonic piece in 6/8 time in F major modulating finally to D major. It is useful as an anthem, part of a service or concert piece.
