This version of Atthis is an adaption by the composer for Flute and Harp from the original song for Mezzo-Soprano and Guitar. The text of the Mezzo-Soprano and Guitar version was based on the poem To Atthis by Sappho (c.630 BC).

This humorous piece could only have been conceived by a slightly warped mind! The title is a play on the 5/8 time signature and on the syncopation and ‘sinking’ theme evidenced throughout the music. Motivic devices such as inversion and retrograde are used extensively. The original version of the work was composed for mandolin and piano and performed in New Zealand in 1962.

This work was written especially for two great friends (and myself): clarinet virtuoso and winner of the 2009 NZSM Concerto Competition, Andrzej Nowicki, and the multi-talented Kylie Nesbit, whose unusual viola-bassoon combination particularly amuses me. The cycles-within-cycles and extreme performance requirements of the piece are directly inspired by Jack Body’s Epicycle string quartet; while the rhythms are inspired by traditional Chinese erhu.

This piece was written for an old friend of mine who was at that time resident in Japan, and wanted a tune for her flute and guitar duo. The ‘favour’ in question refers to said friend’s valiant attempts to find an urgently-required copy of a piece of sheet music, for me. After I sent her this piece, she RETURN-returned the favour by generously sending me a box of eclectic Japanese confectionery!

Crisp, quiet bubblings quickly escalate to organised chaos, only to be disconcerted by the trombone. Eventually restraining the woodwinds, the trombone comes to the fore with a slow melodic passage. Reminders of the opening effervescence gradually infect the calm, boiling to a frenzied finish.
