for a cappella SSATB choir

  • Programme Note

This choral work was written for Porirua City Choir in 2001 on the occasion of the September 11th terrorist attacks. The choir performed the work at St Andrews on the Terrace and at Te Papa in a program of works by New Zealand composers in December 2001.

A voice heralds the approach of Christmas. The Christmas star appears and nature responds to the Good News conveyed by the Spirit and angel choirs. Christ comes again to a troubled world, and sorrowfully passes by.

Ar nAthair

Duration: 04' 00" Year: 2005
for unaccompanied SSAATB choir

  • Programme Note

Since 1994 I have had an on-going association with the city of Galway in Ireland. Initially this was through the Cois Cladaigh Chamber Choir which presented a concert of works of mine in that year, and has subsequently performed and recorded other pieces. Another choir in the city that has included my music in their repertoire was the NUIG Choral Society under the direction of Peter Mannion. This university choir had sung my Nunc Dimittis at a competition in 2005 and the conductor was keen to have something new for their next year’s repertoire. He asked if I might consider a new setting of the Lord’s Prayer (Our Father who art in heaven…), but setting the text in Irish.

The opening section, marked ‘serenely, with great spaciousness’, establishes the tonic key of D major securely. The music unfolds from an initial unison D, through simple tonal chords set against an on-going D in the 1st altos. The remainder of the work is largely chordal, using relatively simple tonal chords centred on the key of D major. The scoring is for unaccompanied SSAATB voices.

Blessing

Duration: 02' 00" Year: 2008
for SATB choir

  • Programme Note

When Auckland Choral was asked to sing at the funeral of a highly regarded and long-standing member of the choir, I offered to compose something special for the service. It needed to be a piece that could be quickly learnt. Blessing was the result. The text is by Wellington-based poet Anne Powell who is a member of the Catholic order of the Cenacle Sisters.

Blessing is a short poem of healing for those “…who walk the earth”, and draws on images of the natural world – the light, the sea, and the wind. The piece is dedicated to the memory of Peter Gibbons, who particularly enjoyed the outdoors.

Blessing of the Trinity

Duration: 02' 45" Year: 2008
anthem for SAB choir and piano (or organ)

  • Programme Note

This short blessing was written for the 50th anniversary of Trinity at Waiake Methodist Church in Auckland. The text is by British clergyman David Adam who for many years was vicar of Holy Island, Lindisfarne. He is now retired but still lives on Lindisfarne. He has published several collections of art, reflections, prayers, and meditations based on the Celtic tradition.

The text asks for the blessing of the Trinity over all facets of life – work, people, thoughts, in fact all who we each come into contact with each day.

Bow low, Mary

setting of traditional Afro-American spiritual text for SSAA choir

This short setting was written at the request of a choral colleague for a ladies choir in Fiji that she had had involvement with on visits to the country. The text is from the Afro-American tradition of spirituals and the music suggests that style of musical setting. Bow low, Mary is dedicated to the singers of the Nasereci Ladies Choir of Namaka, Fiji.
