This short blessing was written for my choir St Mary’s Schola at St Mary’s College. It was composed for use in a performance at mass in St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Auckland.

The text is based on traditional Irish blessing, with a version of the concluding blessing often used in many services added at the end.

In the deepness of the night before Christmas, children dream of exciting and wondrous things: so do adults, but they are also fraught with arrangements and planning for the big day. a call for simplicity and remembering the loving and gifting nature of Christmas. This piece is performed “in the round” i.e. the adult choir encircles the audience and the children stand up the central aisle. The adult choir gradually moves around the audience and sings at times in smaller groupings. The audience does not know where the sound will come from next. The children need to be able to hold 3 simple parts. Finger cymbals are used to indicate stars and nocturnal animals create an interesting opening. It is depicts a New Zealand Christmas experience.

Counting through the tones of ‘In a Landscape’ by John Cage, in the manner of counting a rosary. The title means an offering to Buddha; this is not so much a material offering but more that of a good heart.

Composed in Toronto in June, 2001 and first performed by the Natsuki Emura Piano Duo in a concert of New Zealand piano music at MusiCasa, Tokyo in October 2001.

‘Aunque es de Noche’ was written for the Sydney Philharmonia Choir, and is a setting of a poem by St John of the Cross, entitled ‘Song of the Soul that Rejoices through Knowing God through Faith’. A medieval Sephardic melody is incorporated into the piece, as well some fragments of Flamenco music.

When Auckland Choral was asked to sing at the funeral of a highly regarded and long-standing member of the choir, I offered to compose something special for the service. It needed to be a piece that could be quickly learnt. Blessing was the result. The text is by Wellington-based poet Anne Powell who is a member of the Catholic order of the Cenacle Sisters.

Blessing is a short poem of healing for those “…who walk the earth”, and draws on images of the natural world – the light, the sea, and the wind. The piece is dedicated to the memory of Peter Gibbons, who particularly enjoyed the outdoors.

This short lively piece was originally the final movement of “A Little Easter Cycle” written in 2007 for 3-part mixed-voice choir.

The text is from the Afro-American tradition of spirituals, and tells of the angel rolling the stone away and releasing the risen Christ on Easter Day. It also refers in passing to other characters from the biblical story – Mary arriving at the tomb, the soldiers not knowing what to do, and Pilate with his wise men not knowing what to say.

This re-working of the piece for SSA choir with piano was made early in 2008 for the choir at St Mary’s College, Auckland.
