This wonderful recital piece for 12 part (SSSAAATTTBBB) choir has been performed all over the world and is one of the composer’s best-known works.

It was written in 1974 as part of a set entitled O Magnum Mysterium and first perfromed by the Dorian Choir under Peter Godfrey at the 1975 Three Choirs Festival in England. Since then it has been recorded by choirs in New Zealand and the United States.

The piece is essentially simple in its form using delayed overlaying if the voice parts to startling effect. The overshadowing of Mary by the Holy Spirit, the gestation in the womb and the birth of Jesus can be clearly heard in the parameters of the work.

The text for this work is a short poem by Lucille Clifton (1936-) suggesting an intense religious experience and part of the traditional Latin ‘Magnificat’. The choir is accompanied by pre-recorded sounds which are mostly bell-like sounds, some deep and some very high. Holy Night was written for Opus to sing at the 2000 Secondary Schools Choral Festival.

Y2k Pacemaker is an attempt to reflect some of the increasingly frenzied apprehension associated with the coming millennium, and more specifically, the “year 2000 computer bug”. Whether computer failures will cause a slight inconvenience or be a major disruption to life seems largely a matter for conjecture. However, I find the escalating alarm (sometimes exacerbated by scaremongers) and often ensuing bizarre reactions a fascinating aspect of our psychological makeup. The main idea behind the work is a measured increase in tempo which culminates in some frenetic activity. The musical texture incorporates ordinary scalic movement and has been derived from a simple octatonic scale. (The computer on which I wrote this work is ‘year 2000 compliant’ !) I would like to thank the Auckland Philharmonia for the opportunity to write “Y2k Pacemaker” and have long admired the orchestra’s commitment to New Zealand music.
