This series was written in 2008 from the perspective of a grandparent. The titles indicate the programmatic idea the composer had in mind. In performance, the composer intends all five Bagatelles to follow one another in sequence.

1. Tell Me a Story – Grandparents become skilled in this occupation. Let the music suggest its own story line.

2. Kokako Dreaming – others of its kind, a loss to future generations.
The North Island Kokako is on the endangered list: a secretive bird, most likely to be seen after dawn when it often perches to sing in the open. This piece does not mimic its song, but is rather a lament for its South Island counterpart now extinct, as are many other native New Zealand birds.

3. Irrepressible – Ragtime seems an appropriate style for this piece.

4. Look for the Rainbow – maybe a ploy to distract an unruly grandchild! A piece expressing Romanticism typical of this composer.

5. Runaway – Escape from said grandparent who regrets the inability to keep up with the young!

This Day is a piano piece written for, and to celebrate, my wedding.

As a composer on an occasion such as this, it’s your chance to really pull one out of the bag. It is a challenge however to get a balance between serving the occasion, setting the perfect atmosphere, pleasing the ears of all those present, while still of course developing your craft.

This piece was specifically for the ‘entry of the bride’ at the ceremony, but it stands up wonderfully as a piece in its own right.

This is not the first time I have written for such an occasion, in 2006 my three movement wedding suite Promise was premiered in Taupo.

This Day was premiered on 14th February, 2009, at Caccia Birch House, Palmerston North, by Andrew Cochrane (www.andykeysmusic.com).

This piece is in response to a call for scores in which the requirement was to spend no longer than one day writing a piano piece from start to finish. The piece was permitted to be of no longer than four minutes’ duration, and to take up no more than two notated pages. The theme was ‘Momentary Pleasures’.

Title explanation:
When I went to see a production of The Wizard of Oz, directed by a friend of mine, I glanced down at my brightly-coloured attire and realised that this colour scheme was not entirely dissimilar to that worn by the actors playing the munchkins.
