Duration: 03' 20" Year: 2005
for SATB choir with piano

  • Programme Note

“a Burt Bacharach-styled jazz ballad, performed to a blues tinged cafe piano with a pick of kiwi cliches as hymn words – a nice touch!”
Extract from a review of a performance of this piece on the CD “Spirited People” by the Festival Singers of Wellington.

This is a contemporary folk hymn calling for us to allow God some space in our busy lives. Suitable fro unison singing but also arranged for SATB. Simple piano can be elaborated. Other instruments eg guitar, bass, drums optional.

Pied Beauty

Duration: 03' 20" Year: 2003
for SSAATB choir and piano

  • Programme Note

Inspired by and set to the poem Pied Beauty by Gerard Manly Hopkins, this piece is energetic and jazzy. There is a nice interplay between crisp rhythmic motifs and legato lines. The pianist and the choir needs to be nimble to get the rhythmic subtleties. A fast paced crotchet = 120 is in a swung rhythm. At times the SATB choir divides into SSAATB. The tenors and basses get some fun da ba das and dim de dims. It has enough challenge to suit a Big Sing Finale entry.
