Pied Beauty

Duration: 03' 20" Year: 2003
for SSAATB choir and piano

  • Programme Note

Inspired by and set to the poem Pied Beauty by Gerard Manly Hopkins, this piece is energetic and jazzy. There is a nice interplay between crisp rhythmic motifs and legato lines. The pianist and the choir needs to be nimble to get the rhythmic subtleties. A fast paced crotchet = 120 is in a swung rhythm. At times the SATB choir divides into SSAATB. The tenors and basses get some fun da ba das and dim de dims. It has enough challenge to suit a Big Sing Finale entry.

Psalm 46

Duration: 03' 30" Year: 2007
for SSAA choir with piano

  • Programme Note

A punchy SSAA version of this great psalm. Some crunchy note clusters and speedy sections contrasted with lyrical and murmuring moments. A fanfare-like triumphant opening section, giving way to a smoother gentler passage. These two sections are repeated but with different words and musical variations. The fanfare type passage concludes the piece. The piano accompaniment is energetic and needs rhythmic precision.
