Programme Note

The Marlborough Overture was inspired on a trip from Nelson to Picton at the top of New Zealand’s south island. It alludes to the grandeur of the region – its mountains, valleys and fjords. This composition was Ray’s thesis for his Bachelor of Music degree from Victoria University of Wellington, NZ. The overture has been recorded by the Calgary Youth Orchestra on the CD From the Garden of Eden. A full score and carefully edited parts are readily available.

Programme Note

Lilburn was a student when he wrote Overture: Aotearoa. It was premiered in 1940, as part of the New Zealand Centennial Matinee at His Majesty’s Theatre in London. Although it did not receive its New Zealand premiere until 1959 it has since received numerous performances and several recordings. Described as a work of “unabashed optimism”, Lilburn noted that it had a, “freshness and exhilaration”.

Programme Note

Prelude for Allegro and Strings was commissioned by the Alex Lindsay String Orchestra. The whole work generates from a six-note pattern announced in the opening bars. Colouristic writing is anchored by raw and resonant open fifths – most notably during a plaintive viola solo in the middle of the work.
