This concert offers a rare opportunity to hear a saxophone quartet and symphony orchestra join forces. MCSO welcomes Ivan Meylemans – a young, upcoming European conductor – and New Zealand’s own premiere saxophone quartet Saxcess. For this special occasion, the Manukau City Symphony Orchestra has commissioned American composer Perry Goldstein to arrange his work Abundant Air especially for saxophone quartet and orchestra. Saxcess will also perform a funky solo saxophone quartet piece that will show how beautiful and versatile this combination of instruments is.

The programme begins with new music: Procession commissioned from MCSO Composer in Residence Anthony Ritchie. You’ll also hear violinist Loata Mahe, winner of the Genesis Energy Classic Quest 2007, perform Sarasate’s virtuostic Gypsy Airs.
