Music Seminar: Eve de Castro-Robinson

10 August 2010 1:05 PM

Dr Eve de Castro-Robinson presents her current research, New Vocalisms: An Illustrated Seminar on Recent Directions in the Work of Eve de Castro-Robinson.

Eve says: " New Vocalisms includes my recent research and creative work: Breathe (an electroacoustic work); and the garden was full of voices for vocalising pianist; and Ring out, wild bells for countertenor and chamber choir. These all explore various sonic presentations of the human voice.

“In Breathe, the voice of a young Italian woman I recorded at an artist’s residency in Florida is digitally manipulated with recorded flute material to present an intimate, sensuous portrait. Commissioner, Irish flautist William Dowdall plays the bass flute and sliding headjoint flute recordings.

“The piece and the garden was full of voices, commissioned by Barry Margan for the 2010 SOUNZtender project, requires the pianist to whistle, hum, chant and sing to heighten the sonic experience of this ritualistic and poetic work.

Ring out, wild bells is a choral tribute to Arvo Pärt, written for The University of Auckland Chamber Choir with countertenor Dean Sky-Lucas. This work was premiered during the School of Music’s Arvo Pärt Festival in August. The voices here act as bells in a texture of sustained vocal tintinnabulation."
