PRISM

7 August 2010 7:30 PM

PRISM, this concert from The University of Auckland Chamber Choir conducted by Professor Karen Grylls, is both the highlight and culmination of a two-day festival celebrating the works of twentieth century Estonian composer, Arvo Pärt.

“I could compare my music to white light which contains all colours,” said Arvo Pärt. “Only a prism can divide the colours and make them appear; this prism could be the spirit of the listener.”

The Choir, with countertenor Dean Sky-Lucas and organist James Tibbles, will perform Pärt’s pieces Berliner Messe, Magnificat, My heart’s in the Highlands, The woman with the alabaster box and Trivium for Organ as well as premiereing a new work, Ring out, wild bells, from Eve de Castro Robinson.

Eve says of the work: “Ring out, wild bells is a choral tribute to Arvo Pärt … The voices here act as bells in a texture of sustained vocal tintinnabulation.”
