Arvo Pärt Festival: A Search For Unity

6 August 2010
7 August 2010

Arvo Pärt Festival: A Search for Unity is a two-day festival celebrating the works of the twentieth century Estonian composer. It is the brainchild of Associate Professor Karen Grylls, Dr Eve de Castro-Robinson and Dean Sky-Lucas from the NICAI School of Music at the University of Auckland.

“I could compare my music to white light which contains all colours,” said Arvo Pärt. “Only a prism can divide the colours and make them appear; this prism could be the spirit of the listener.”

The festival begins with a number of Pärt’s works performed by School of Music piano students during the Friday Lunchtime Concerts series. An open composition workshop will follow with discussion between Eve de Castro-Robinsion and fellow academic and specialist in twentieth century European music Dr Davinia Caddy around Eve’s new work Ring out, wild bells, which will premiere at the PRISM Chamber Choir concert on Saturday evening. The Karlheinz Company also pays tribute to Pärt with a programme of works by international and New Zealand composers complementing Pärt’s haunting Fratres which will feature in the concert.
