Breaking New Ground: New Music Festival 2010

6 February 2010
12 February 2010

Breaking New Ground is the title of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra’s New Music Festival.

Seven concert events (including a ‘double feature’) plus a bonus ‘pre-festival happening’ will provide audiences with a fantastic array of new music across many genres: from Symphony Orchestra to Brass Bands and chamber groups, from throat singers to a collaboration between the University of Manitoba Computer Science and Music Departments (WALLBALLS!), from the premiere of a new cello concerto by John Taverner to a tribute ‘concerto’ for the late Les Paul, the inventor of the electric guitar featuring four electric guitar soloists, 20 guitarists and the WSO

For seven nights we celebrate the beauty of our planet with music from all over the world’ says the Festival brochure. ‘From the distant lands of the Arctic to the urban sounds of our city, we bring you music that reflects our connection with nature. This year we are proud to feature new works by Vincent Ho (Canada), John Tavener (UK), and this year’s distinguished guest composers John Psathas (NZ), Derek Charke (Canada), Tim Brady (Canada), distinquished guest artist in residence Jenny Lin (piano) and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Steven Stucky (USA).

You can download a complete brochure for the festival here.

Below are the three concert events featuring music by John Psathas.
