Chamber Music New Zealand host this national 10-centre tour by Josef Spacek, winner of the 2009 Michael Hill International Violin Competition. He will be accompanied by renowned pianist Michael Houstoun.
Recently graduated from the Curtis Institute of Music, Josef Špaček will begin post-graduate studies at Juilliard with Itzhak Perlman later this year. Born in the Czech Republic, he was educated at the Prague Conservatory. In 2006 he released his debut CDs that feature the complete Ysaÿe sonatas for solo violin.
Josef will perform one of two programmes in each concert. The first comprises Bach, Mozart, Ysaÿe, Prokofiev, Smetana and Wakatipu, the Gareth Farr work for solo violin written especially for the 2009 Michael Hill International Violin Competition. The second programme (to be performed in Hamilton, Napier, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin) comprises Martinů, Janáček, Ysaÿe and Beethoven.
