Oceania meets Asia: World Music Days 2009

Instigated by Jack Body, this major conference to be held in Beijing exploring Maori and Pacific Island music and practice in a multi-cultural and Pacific/Asian context. A delegation of 27 musicians, composers, scholars, film makers and other artists representing New Zealand, Maori and Pacific Island cultures, will give papers, lectures, demonstrations and performances.

There will be four conference days, each including a concert featuring New Zealand, Maori and Pacific music and including some sonic art/intermedia installations.

The four conference sessions and associated concerts are divided into themes:

  • Sunday 1 November: Multicultural NZ
  • Monday 2 November: Tangata Whenua: People of the land
  • Tuesday 3 November: Visual Art and Music
  • Wednesday 4 November: Dialogue between Chinese and Pacific Music

More details about the scheduled concerts appear below as attached events. Installations include He waiata whaiaipo by Rachel Rakena and Body Tok from Phil Dadson. Details of conference papers, lectures/demonstrations and presentations will be published separately.
