APO: Houstoun plays Beethoven

Concert

The APO premiere Anastasis by their Composer in Residence, Chris Adams.
Chris says of the work:
Anastasis is an exploration of musical contrasts where chamber music elements of intimacy and social interplay are juxtaposed with the colour and power of a full symphonic orchestra.

Also in this concert, Michael Houstoun, one of New Zealand’s best loved artists, joins APO and music director Eckehard Stier in a performance of Beethoven’s magnificent tour de force, the Piano Concerto No. 4. This was the last concerto that Beethoven wrote to play himself, before deafness ended his performing career. It is both elegaic and stormy, a portrait of the personality of Beethoven himself.

Storms of a different kind open the concert, with the Four Sea Interludes from Britten’s opera Peter Grimes, depicting the shifting moods of the ocean.
