SOUNZ Community Commission |
Award Information
The SOUNZ Community Commission is sponsored by an anonymous donor and administered by SOUNZ. The aim of the commission is to bring professional contemporary music to the attention of the community and to allow a community group (amateur musicians) to work closely with a professional composer to create a new work.
Each year proposals are submitted (usually by 30 June) by community groups and/or composers for musical projects that will see them working in a creative partnership. The successful proposal, which is selected by the donor of the commission, results in a sum, usually of $1,500 being given to the composer involved in the project. The project is usually completed by the following March with a performance either having taken place or planned.
A score and /or recording of the work is lodged with the Centre, and SOUNZ Licence or publishing arranged so that it can be performed by other similar groups.
Scilla Askew, Executive Director of SOUNZ comments: “The SOUNZ Community Commission is all about bringing professional composers and community musicians together. Not only do both these parties benefit in the process, but also, when the result is performed, the audience get to share in the energy and vitality that is engendered in the commissioning of new music.”
