Auckland Philharmonia Graduate Composer Workshops
These workshops are funded by Lion Foundation and Creative NZ. Adults 18 years and over can participate in the APO Graduate Composers’ Workshop and have their new pieces for orchestra played and recorded. There are two options – developing composers can opt to have their piece played through in July, and then work on revising towards the September recording. More experienced composers can submit their parts later and await the September session. All composers who submit pieces are encouraged to come to all sessions, regardless of whether their pieces are selected, to learn more about composing for an orchestra
from the Composer-in-Residence, leading conductor and musicians.
The five selected emerging composers have the chance to hear their pieces at the first session, and to receive feedback from the orchestra musicians, conductor and current Composer-in-Residence. They then have two months to spend revising their pieces for the recording session. Established composers are able to have their piece recorded without the first reading. The final two sessions are open to anyone interested in the possibility of programming these pieces for future performance.
In 2008 this project took the form of a collaboration between the orchestra and NBR New Zealand Opera, resulting in 6 new works for voice and orchestra.
