NZSO-SOUNZ Readings

Awarded: 2003

Award Information

The NZSO-SOUNZ Readings is a collaborative project which aims to increase the performance of orchestral music by New Zealand composers, which began in November 1998. SOUNZ and the NZSO generally hold the Readings twice a year in Wellington. Since 1998, more than 70 works by nearly 50 New Zealand composers have been included in the NZSO-SOUNZ Readings project, about a third of which have now received further performances or been released on CD.

SOUNZ publicises a ‘call for submissions’ and convenes a selection panel. The panel selects four to six works that will be given a reading from those submitted.

Over two days, the NZSO rehearse the selected works. Each day finishes with a complete play-through of that day’s selection. Through the generous support of Radio NZ Concert the works are recorded as a personal resource for the composers.

The public may attend these Readings by invitation, and orchestral managers and programmers are encouraged to attend – please email info@sounz.org.nz

During most readings there is a seminar for composers, performers and interested observers to discuss the programming of New Zealand music.
