Edwin Carr Scholarship

Awarded: 2005

Award Information

Edwin Carr spent a significant part of his life studying and working in Europe and Australia. He acknowledged how important these overseas experiences were to his own development as a musician and composer. The Edwin Carr Foundation was established after the composer’s death in 2003, to commemorate his work, and to provide financial assistance to outstanding New Zealand composers wishing to further their studies, funded by his estate. The annual Edwin Carr Foundation Scholarship, is administered by Creative New Zealand, on behalf of the Edwin Carr Foundation, and was first awarded in 2005. Up to $25,000 is available each year, which will generally be used to support one or two scholarships, for composers at any stage of their career.

Creative New Zealand Chief Executive Stephen Wainwright comments: “This is the first scholarship in New Zealand dedicated to the professional development of composers."
