Award Information

John Ure, Auckland Philharmonia Director of Operations, was co-instrumental in initiating the orchestra’s Composer-in-Residence scheme in 1990. He says the Auckland Philharmonia has always been a major supporter of New Zealand music and musicians, and having a resident composer is something the orchestra is proud of.

The APO has an excellent tradition of commissioning and performing new work by New Zealand’s leading composers, and the Orchestra’s Composer-in-Residence programme plays a significant role in achieving this. The Orchestra calls for applications each year, and composers apply in writing, including recordings of at least two orchestral of chamber works, plus scores and a CV.

The chosen composer is asked to assist in the implementation of the contemporary music programmes and activities, along with various other activities. The stipend is approximately $27,000. The residency applies for twelve months from October each year, which may be extended to two years.

For the first time in 2007, the APO has also appointed a Young Composer-in-Residence, in addition to their Composer-in-Residence scheme. This is a residency to write chamber works for APO musicians. Applications are by invitation only, for the time being.
