The TSB Showplace complex, located in the CDB of New Plymouth, was originally built in 1883 and known as the Alexander Hall. It was enlarged in 1904 and sold to the New Plymouth Theatre Company and renamed the Theatre Royal. It was then destroyed by fire in 1916.After being rebuilt it opened in 1925 as the New Plymouth Opera House. It continued mainly as a picture theatre until 1969, when it fell into disuse. Support from New Plymouth District Council and TSB Bank finally saw a refurbished theatre open in 1999 with additional facilities added.

The complex now consists of two theatres, TSB Theatre and Theatre Royal, and a function room, the Alexandra Room.

The Theatre Royal is a black box-style, multi-purpose theatre with a capacity of 410. It is ideal for smaller shows including choral performances and music recitals, together with a number of local community events. All audio, lighting and several pianos including a Steinway Grand Piano are available to hire.

Many New Zealand artists have featured at the TSB Showplace and include Rob Guest, Dame Malvina Major and Sir Howard Morrison, Chamber Music annual series, NZSO Small Tour, the Hauraki 40th Anniversary Tour featuring Hello Sailor and Th’Dudes, Holly Smith, Nesian Mystic and Brooke Fraser.
