Wellington Youth Sinfonietta

Established: 1993

Profile

Wellington Youth Sinfonietta was founded in 1993. It provides orchestral training for players from Grade V level upwards (Grade VI for violinists), working with a professional conductor. It is affiliated to Wellington Youth Orchestra and also works closely with CHAMPS, the Chamber Music programme, and with the Victoria Academy.

Wellington Youth Sinfonietta provides a valuable foundation in orchestral playing for young musicians in the greater Wellington area, with opportunities for solo performance for its senior players, and performance opportunities for student composers.

Entry is by annual audition. Sectional tutorials by NZSO players are given during the year as part of concert preparation. Senior players often move on from WYS to Wellington Youth Orchestra or to university study in music performance. WYS composers include Karlo Margetic, Tabea Squire, and Isaac Stone, all of whom have won prizes for their compositions.
