NIMBY Opera presents short, innovative opera works to the NZ public, and aims to create performance and work opportunities for the top up-and-coming NZ opera talent, including singers, directors, technical crew and administrators. NIMBY Opera produces innovative, exciting short opera works in Wellington, New Zealand.
The company was formed in May 2006 with four objectives:
1. To present professional, accessible and innovative short opera works to the general public of Wellington
2. To create performance and work opportunities for the top up-and-coming opera talent in Wellington – singers, directors, arts administrators and technical crew
3. To provide a different experience to the general public from the traditional ‘Grand Opera’
4. To support and commission new works by New Zealand composers
In February 2007 NIMBY Opera produced the New Zealand premiere of Leonard Bernstein’s ‘Trouble in Tahiti’ in the Wellington Fringe Festival. The production was regarded as a success, exceeding box office targets and gaining strong critical acclaim.
In 2008 they will perform ‘Good Angel, Bad Angel’ by Lyell Cresswell in Wellington, Palmerston North and Auckland.
