Tuhonohono

Profile

A group of seven musicians, some of pakeha and some of ‘Maori origin, form the nucleus of Tuhonohono an ensemble formed to perform Gillian Whitehead’s works. “Tuhonohono” means to bring together, to weave, to join, to support, and hence in this interpretation: ‘weaving together the strands of Maori and European musical traditions.’

Gillian Karawe Whitehead is considered one of the most important composers in Australasia. In 2004, she was invited to present a concert of her music in Jakarta, and formed Tuhonohono for the occasion. They have also performed at the Hei Tiki Gallery in Rotorua in 2005, the Bay of Islands Arts Festival and as part of Chamber Music New Zealand’s ‘Encompass’ series.

Performers with Tuhonohono include: Ramonda Te Maiharoa-Taleni (voice), Emma Sayers (piano), Ashley Brown (cello), Richard Nunns (taonga puoro), Ingrid Culliford (flute) and Ben Hoadley (bassoon).
