In 1948 violinist Alex Lindsay founded the Alex Lindsay String Orchestra, one of the most important orchestral institutions in this country’s history. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s the orchestra commissioned and performed a great deal of music from New Zealand composers resulting in a wide repertoire of string orchestra works by NZ composers.
