Profile
The ACO has been a tireless champion of New Zealand music. It has been pioneering in this regard with its composer portrait concerts which have featured the music of one NZ composer. Since 2007 there have been concerts entirely dedicated to the music of one NZ composer. So far the featured composers have been Gareth Farr, Gillian Whitehead, Ross Harris, John Rimmer and John Psathas. The orchestra has also collaborated with Don McGlashan, Ivan Zagni and Jonathan Besser in the three “Gone to the beach” concerts.
The ACO is a professional orchestra comprising freelance Auckland musicians including members of the APO. It also presents mainstream classical programmes and these too often include NZ music. The orchestra has also presented concert performances of operas (Mozart – La clemenza di Tito, Gluck – Orfeo et Euridice) and full productions in collaboration with the Auckland Opera Studio (Mozart – Idomeneo, Weill – Seven Deadly Sins)
