Profile

The TOWER New Zealand Youth Choir provides an advanced training environment and performance opportunities for young NZ singers aged 18-25 years old, and enables them to achieve excellence in choral music nationally and internationally. Since its formation in 1979 the choir has achieved a remarkable number of awards and accolades, including the “Grand Prix” in Slovakia, and the “Choir of the World” award at the International Musical Eisteddfod in Wales in 1999. Most recently the choir achieved highest marks in several categories at the 43rd International Choral Competition in Gorizia, Italy in 2004. The choir runs in 3-year cycles, with auditions held throughout the country. The culmination of each choir cycle is an overseas tour, participating in festivals, competitions and cultural events of all kinds. For the choir this also provides an opportunity to showcase New Zealand and Pacific music to the world. At present the Choir is comprised of 52 voices. The choir meets at least three times a year in different locations throughout New Zealand. At each meeting the choir rehearses and performs at least one concert, and where possible will undertake open workshops with local schools and community groups. The choir performs a wide range of a capella works by international composers. New Zealand works, including kapa haka pieces, hold a special place in their repertoire. The choir will represent New Zealand at festivals and competitions in Canada, Wales and Spain during its international tour in June/July 2007.
