Biography

James Dunlop is a freelance composer and sound designer. He has spent the last six years studying classical and electroacoustic composition where he recently received a Victoria masters scholarship and the Jenny McLeod prize for orchestral composition. He has recently had instrumental compositions performed by Gateseven and the NZSM orchestra but is mainly a solo artist who performs his own works. These works are manipulated or created with electroacoustic techniques and realized through acousmatic mediums.

While he works mainly in theatre he has recently been branching out into film and multi media as a composer and sound designer. He stems from a popular music background but discovered that his musical style was more condusive to classical and electroacoutic composition. He has extended his musical direction to include theatre, film and dance.


His recent productions include: Steel Skeletons – a collaborative dance project for the New Zealand School of Dance and the short film Behind the Door by director Ella Liao
