Created in New Zealand, heard around the world!

SOUNZ achieves this through services and projects which:

The Centre was established in 1991 and
is a not-for-profit charitable trust whose Trustees serve in an honorary capacity. (Charities Commission Registration No. CC22488)

SOUNZ is a member of IAMIC, the International Association of Music Information Centres, a worldwide network of organisations promoting new music. IAMIC is a member of the International Music Council of UNESCO.

About this website

SOUNZ launched its first website in 1997 – the current website is our third. Each has seen a substantial improvement in the range of information and services that can be offered and this ‘third generation’ incorporates many new innovations including faceted searching, digital samples, downloads and full e-commerce facilities.

Through funding from the
Community Partnership Fund of the National Digital Strategy and Creative New Zealand and with the support of the Composers Association of New Zealand, and many others in the musical community, SOUNZ has been able to build the current site.

Influenced by the work of our colleagues at the
Australian Music Centre we have chosen to underpin the music data on the site with FRBR (Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records), a conceptual model developed by the International Federation of Library Associations. The site and functionality were built by Catalyst IT Ltd and the design was done by Springload Web Design.

Other funders and supporters include the Lilburn Trust, Pelorus Trust, Radio New Zealand Concert, National Library of New Zealand , APRA, PIPC Global Management and many individuals in the IT and arts community.

A special grant from the Stout Trust enabled further improvement to data and functionality of the website during 2008.

Terms and Conditions for the use of the site can be seen here.

Library

SOUNZ has the largest and most accessible collection of New Zealand music in the world. This collection grows by about 5% each year as new works are written, published and recorded. For an annual fee, library members have the special privilege of being able to borrow these works for up to two months, allowing all kinds of performers, students, teachers and researchers to make informed choices about programming and study. In this way SOUNZ supports the continued growth of New Zealand music in concert programmes and classrooms.

We have three levels of annual membership: Individual, Small Organisation and Large Organisation. Small Organisations include schools and choirs. Large organisations include tertiary institutions and orchestras. Standard membersip allows members to borrow a certain number of items each year. In addition, we have a 'super-size' option at each level, giving members the opportunity to borrow as many items each year as they wish.

Individuals can become Library Members online by clicking here.

For more information, to apply for Library Membership manually, or to apply for Organisation Library Memberships, download the Library Membership form [360kB pdf] by clicking here, complete it and fax or post it to SOUNZ.
